Printing processes compared

DTF vs. DTG — what’s what?

Both processes deliver photorealistic garment printing from 1 piece. The difference lies in the process, the feel and the ideal use case.

DTF printing

Direct-to-Film

In the DTF process, the design is first printed mirror-inverted onto a special PET film, dusted with hot-melt adhesive powder and cured. The finished transfer is then heat-pressed onto the garment.

Advantages

  • Works on almost all fabrics and colours
  • Ideal for dark and black textiles
  • Highly stretchable — perfect for sportswear
  • Bold, opaque colours
  • Very washfast (up to 60 °C)
  • No minimum quantity, fast to produce
  • Unlike vinyl printing, DTF requires no tedious weeding

Worth considering

  • ~ A light film is noticeable on the fabric
  • ~ Slightly stiffer than the softest finishes

Ideal for: T-shirts, hoodies, caps, sports textiles, dark fabrics, leather (genuine and synthetic), plastics (PVC, polypropylene), cardboard, felt, cotton bags

DTG printing

Direct-to-Garment

DTG (direct-to-garment) printing puts the ink straight into the textile fibres — like an inkjet printer, but for clothing. A specialised industrial printer sprays ink in the CMYK colour space (plus special colours such as white where needed) directly onto the finished garment.

Advantages

  • Softest print result — no film, just ink
  • Photorealistic on white & light fabrics
  • Complex details and gradients rendered perfectly
  • Very natural feel when worn
  • Good environmental profile (water-based inks)

Worth considering

  • ~ Dark fabrics require pre-treatment
  • ~ White textiles = best results

Ideal for: White/light t-shirts, photo prints, fine details, art prints

Decision guide

What suits your project?

Answer these questions to find the right printing process for your project.

1

Is your garment dark or black?

Recommendation: DTF — DTF covers perfectly even on dark fabrics. DTG needs elaborate pre-treatment.

2

Do you want a single piece with a photo or art print?

Recommendation: DTG — DTG prints directly into white/light fabric — soft feel, no film.

3

Do you need sportswear or stretchy textiles?

Recommendation: DTF — The DTF film stretches with the fabric — ideal for jerseys and performance wear.

4

Do you want gradients or photos on light fabric?

Recommendation: Both — DTG for the softest result, DTF for extra durability — both deliver photorealism.

5

Do you need a larger run with an identical design?

Recommendation: DTF — DTF transfers can be prepared and heat-pressed in batches — faster & cheaper.

Still unsure? No problem — just describe your project and we’ll recommend the best process. Our advice is always free.

DTF & DTG FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DTF and DTG?
DTF (direct-to-film) prints onto a transfer film, which is then heat-pressed onto the garment. DTG (direct-to-garment) prints straight into the fabric. DTF is more versatile and works on almost all fabrics and colours. DTG delivers the softest result on white and light textiles with no noticeable film.
What is the minimum order quantity for DTF or DTG printing?
From 1 piece — with no minimum order quantity. For larger runs we quote volume prices. DTF printing becomes especially economical from about 10 pieces, because transfer production scales efficiently. For runs of 100+ pieces, take a look at our bulk order page.
How washfast are DTF and DTG prints?
DTF prints are very washfast and, with proper care (wash inside out, 40–60 °C, no tumble dryer), last for many years. DTG prints on pre-treated textiles are also very durable. Both far outlast simple hobby-grade iron-on films. For absolute maximum wash resistance — for example workwear that goes into industrial laundering — we recommend embroidery.
Which file formats do I need for DTF/DTG printing?
Ideally a PNG with a transparent background or an SVG vector file. Minimum resolution 300 dpi at the intended print size. JPEG works too, but without transparency. We check your file free of charge and flag any quality issues.
Can I send in my own t-shirt or hoodie?
Yes! You can send your garments by post or drop them off in Kassel. We discuss in advance whether the fabric is suitable for DTF or DTG. Cotton (100% or blends) works best — polyester has limitations with DTG.
What are DTF transfers and can I buy them separately?
DTF transfers are ready-printed, adhesive-coated designs on film that you can apply yourself with a heat press or an iron. We also sell DTF transfers individually at /en/dtf-transferfolien — ideal if you want to do the pressing yourself.
